No, I didn’t misspell a common word, this stands for Straight Edge

Some of you may have already come across the term „Straight Edge“ but probably don’t know what it’s really all about.
The term straight edge basically means that a person relinquishes: alcohol, drugs, smoking and often-changing, numerous sexual partners.
The whole point is, that as a a real self-confident person of today’s society, you don’t need any sort of drugs, whether it be hard or soft drugs, to be able to get through the day(s).
A straight-edge lifestyle is often combined with vegetarianism or veganism as well, but not necessarily.
Straight-edge propagates a lifestyle of self-determination. This lifestyle doesn’t only reflect in the mentioned use of hard or soft drugs, but basically in every situation that you may come across – the main conclusion is, that someone follows his/her dreams and doesn’t let himself get distracted by society’s views, expectations or even restrictions.
The term straight-edge originated in 70s hardcore punk music, as Ian McKaye of the band Minor Threat wrote the lyrics to the song „Straight Edge“

"I'm a person just like you
But I've got better things to do
Than sit around and fuck my head
Hang out with the living dead
Snort white shit up my nose
Pass out at the shows
I don't even think about speed
That's something I just don't need
I've got the straight edge"

This song had an immense influence on the 70s hardcore scene, as it was in deep contrast to the, at that time, heavily drug-influenced punk and hardcore scene.

After that, a whole scene of straight-edge hardcore bands originated, and bands like: Minor Threat, the Teen Idles, SOA or DYS gained popularity within that scene.

From that point on, SxE usually could be seen in the hardcore-genre – some bands i also would like to mention: Earth Crisis, Inside Out (with Zack de la Rocha from Rage against the Machine), Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits.

Nowadays, straight edge can be found in multiple musical genres, but it still is mainly represented within the hardcore-punk genre.

The great thing about SxE is, that, for adolescents or teens, it is a way to join a scene that is different from their parental expectations, and therefore still rebellious, but in a healthy, self-determining way.

It helped me find out more about myself – what I want to pursue/achieve in life, what really makes me happy (apart from alcohol) and how I treat other people – with RESPECT.

But, like I already hinted in other features of this blog – the main point, in my opinion, is to be TOLERANT – everyone is free to choose what he or she wants to do in life – who are you to judge them?

Last but not least, I’d like to mention a few bands, that got me to into the SxE lifestyle: Maroon, Heaven Shall Burn, Rise Against
